Approach

Work at Naledi starts from a place of deep respect and personal connection.

We are from Africa or have lived and worked there. We have been educators and have ourselves felt the transformative power of education. When we look for partners to support, we look for people like ourselves; good, reliable people dedicated to improving the lives of African girls through education.

Naledi aims to help those in greatest need.

By supporting people with the fewest opportunities and resources, we leverage disproportionate impact from each dollar we spend. Furthermore, not only are women and girls the least advantaged, they have proven to be the most productive beneficiaries of development aid ultimately spreading their gains across the largest number of family and community members.

We have no agenda beyond educating girls in Africa, so we don’t push our ideas.

Instead, we try to pull out others.’ Using our networks, we identify trustworthy, inspiring people, and approach them for collaboration. (We do not accept unsolicited proposals.) Together, we pinpoint their greatest needs, and, together, we determine how Naledi can best assist. This has resulted in some surprising, impactful projects. We invite you to read about some of them on our “Projects” page.

We build relationships with our social entrepreneur partners

We tend to support relatively small, short-term investments with immediate impact. A benefit of such discrete projects is that we can quickly see what works and what doesn’t and who our best partners are. Once a productive relationship is built, we like to invest in more projects within the same program with a long-term goal of deep impact

We see the strength of our partners’ experience and the power they hold.

There are clear trends in needs and solutions across our partner groups. It quickly became obvious that another way to leverage our impact is to facilitate communication between our partners and other interested education professionals. Through our twice-annual community Ndaba meetings and the sharing of successful strategies, we encourage and facilitate quality outcomes far beyond what we alone could reach.
